Calibration of 8 Gauge Blocks by Interferometry.

The main purpose of this cooperation was to aid the development of a software package for thecalculation of gauge block size using the NPL / Hilger-Watts Interferometer which was being developed by NML. During a visit by Sean Peyton from the NML-Enterprise Ireland to Gum- Poland, the calibration by interferometry of a number of gauge blocks was carried out and the measured values obtained were compared to measurements made on the NML interferometer on their return to Ireland.

Calibration using a Kösters (GUM) and Hilger & Watts (NML) interferometers were discussed at length, including the possible sources of error, from which an uncertainty budget could be determined.

Proposal

 

 

GUM to demonstrate the calibration of 8 gauge blocks 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 10.0, 25.0, 50.0, 75.0, 100.0 mm to Enterprise Ireland staff. On return to Ireland, the gauge blocks will be recalibrated in Enterprise Ireland and an evaluation of the results carried out.
