Calibration of railway energy measurement system - AC and DC

The EN 50463-1 standard for railway applications defines an Energy Measurement System (EMS) which includes the Energy Measurement Function (EMF), the Data Handling System (DHS) and the communication system. The EMF consists of three functions: Voltage Measurement Function (VMF), Current Measurement Function (CMF) and Energy Calculation function (ECF).

In order to calibrate the EMF new capabilities for on-board train calibration need to be developed.  These capabilities consist of calibration set-ups and robust data processing tools, which will allow high accuracy energy and power quality (PQ) measurements under highly dynamic electrical conditions. This involves the development of hardware, software and new methods for calibrations and periodic re-verifications of the entire measurement chain.

New laboratory facilities and calibration services have been developed and activated for the calibration of EMFs for AC 15 kV-16.7 Hz and 25 kV-50 Hz systems up to 30 kV and 500 A with superimposed distortion up to 5 kHz and phase-fired current waveform. A new facility for the calibration both in laboratory and on-site of EMFs for DC system (600 V – 3 kV) has been developed. The system is able to generate arbitrary voltage and current signals up to 4 kV and 2400 A with ripple up to 30 kHz for the voltage and 600 Hz for the current. New calibration services have been activated for DC VMF, CMF and EMS.
