Electricity networks are becoming more complex as they increasingly accommodate and connect rapidly changing modern technologies. The flow of energy is becoming bi-directional, consumers become producers, intermittent power sources need to be managed in real time, and grid stability is more at risk than ever. Operating the power system is a complex task, which requires active management and quick response to grid changes.

In order for this to work effectively, the operators need to have constant visibility of the status of the grid, collecting information from a reliable network of sensors and measurement technology that, in most cases, still need to be deployed.

Cutting edge research and innovation from EURAMET’s Smart Electricity Grids Network is supporting this challenge by investigating better measurement techniques, remotely controlled and calibrated sensors, supporting and expanding the digitisation of the monitoring infrastructure and, most importantly, providing data analytics solutions for the enormous amount of data that is produced and will increase in the future.
