Traceable, Faster and More Accurate Measurement Software for Vector Network Analysers

In technologies ranging from computers to security scanners, advanced electronics can be found operating at frequencies extending up to the terahertz range. To characterise the performance of these high frequency (HF) systems, users rely upon measurements obtained from Vector Network Analysers (VNAs). The complexity of HF circuitry is growing, yet VNA calibration measurements can be in error and need improved traceability to standards held by National Measurement Institutes (NMIs).

This project will develop, test and validate software for the calibration of VNAs used to perform HF circuit measurements; this builds upon the techniques and end-user guidance outputs from the EMRP project HFCircuits. Benefits of this automated calibration method will include faster data processing, reduced risk of error and improved measurement accuracy; for software usage and understanding of the underlying mathematical theory, a training package will also be developed. Through a dedicated project website and end-user events, uptake of the VNA calibration tool will be promoted to the relevant industry sectors.
