World Standards Day, 14 October 2019

Theme: Video standards create a global stage

As stated on the International Standards Organisation website, each year on 14 October the members of international standards committees IEC, ISO and ITU celebrate World Standards Day. This is a way of acknowledging the work of technical experts across the world who provide input into thousands of published international standards. ISO alone have published more than 22,800 written standards.

This year the theme of World Standards Day is ‘video standards create a global stage’.  Having standards recognised and respected all over the world means that video encoded on one device can be decoded by another, regardless of the device being used. This introduces economies of scale that help to grow the market, giving innovators the confidence to invest in new video applications and services.

Technical advances in communications supported by robust standardisation enable the safe, secure and seamless transmission of data via many different devices.

EURAMET has a close collaboration with standardisation bodies, and is proud to support joint research projects, through the European Metrology Research Programmes, EMRP and EMPIR, that develop measurement capabilities and provide input to international standards across many scientific and technical areas.
