The EMN for Smart Electricity Grids jointly runs successful excellence training
Supporting the development of smart electricity grids across Europe
Measurements and Metrology for Smart Electricity Grids - Excellence Training
More than 80 people attended a recent online Excellence Training event run over 9 days in May 2022 and jointly organised by the Politecnico di Torino and INRiM, Italy’s National Metrology Institute, with the support of the European Metrology Network.
The excellence course provided an extensive overview of the general measurement challenges related to smart electricity grids together with in-depth training on selected key measurement challenges, contributions to the security of electricity supplies, and considered grid evolution in the context of the ongoing energy transition.
Topics covered include:
- Basics of metrology
- Understanding and evaluating measurement uncertainty
- Overview of smart electricity grids and their measurement challenges
- Measurement of power and energy
- Measurement for grid efficiency
- Power quality measurement and emerging challenges
- Phasor measurement units for grid control and monitoring
- Timing and synchronisation in smart grids
- Instrument transformers and low power output sensors for grid current and voltage measurement
- High voltage test techniques
Excellence training presentations
Gert Rietveld from VSL, until recently the Chair of the European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids, said
‘We planned this excellence course following several requests from our stakeholders and we are very pleased with the great attendance and the good feedback we received after the course. I feel that courses like this can provide a unique opportunity to industry experts, university students and metrologists from NMIs and DIs to get deep insight in all the relevant measurement issues for smart electricity grids.’
Gabriella Crotti from INRIM, who initiated and organised the excellence course, adds
‘We were very pleased to see that at least 50% of the attendance was made by PhD students and young researchers. This confirms that Smart Electricity grids are an attractive subject and there is an interest to learn and know more about the way measurements will contribute to their full implementation or development.’
The European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids
The European Metrology Network (EMN) for Smart Electricity Grids is a single point of contact across Europe that provides stakeholder support for measurement challenges in the realisation of smart electricity grids.
This EMN provides support for standardisation, testing, and the research and development of national smart grid development and implementation strategies. By promoting a reliable and robust measurement infrastructure, the EMN for Smart Electricity grids will help Europe to meet its sustainability and climate change goals and support the energy systems of the future.
EMPIR projects are co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
