TC-IM Digital Transformation group fosters collaboration on digital topics

In February 2021, EURAMET’s working group ‘Metrology for Digital Transformation’ (M4D), a part of the Technical Committee for Interdisciplinary Metrology (TC-IM), held two virtual workshops. The group is working to bring together EURAMET members specialised in data management, digital certificates and processes, the Internet of Things and sensor networks.

The working group’s overall objective is to support EURAMET with the implementation of a strategic digital transformation plan for Europe, that is aligned with the aims of the European Commission to foster a fair, competitive and digitally advanced economy. By planning for these two February workshops for several months in advance, M4D hoped to receive useful input to support the digital transformation of Europe and European metrology.

The first of the M4D’s workshops was organised for EURAMET Technical Committee Chairs, and it focused on harmonising digital calibration certificates and processes across EURAMET. At the event, the working group were able to disseminate current, state-of-the-art information and estimate specific, field-related requirements for digital calibration certifications at the TC level. Three hours of live discussions helped the group to thoroughly apprehend the needs of the EURAMET community in view of a generalised adoption of digital calibration certificates.

The second workshop was centred around the specific needs of European Metrology Networks (EMNs). Participants had the chance to brainstorm stakeholder needs, research and development themes for the future, and potentially new capacity-building topics related to digital transformation; all with a view to ensure the coordination of strategic research agendas with EURAMET’s broader digital strategy.

In fact, discussions like these were pivotal in shaping the success of both workshops. The working group convenor, Sascha Eichstaedt, comments on the outcomes of these virtual events:

“My colleagues and I have invested quite a lot of time and energy into the preparation of the workshops. Today, we are thrilled with the attendees’ approval of the initiative and the richly diverse feedback they have supplied during the six hours of stimulating discussions.

The work that now awaits us is an in-depth analysis of the collected information in order to draw up the formal outcomes of the encounters. Based on this, we are hoping to put forward a well pondered strategy that will enable a coordinated digital transformation of European metrology.” ­­
