New EMPIR project launches stakeholder survey to help assess industry needs
EMPIR project New metrological methods for biofuel materials analysis (19ENG09, BIOFMET) which has recently started work has launched a questionnaire for stakeholders, and the results will feed into the project’s initial tasks.
Anyone who is measuring energy content and other parameters of biofuel (powerplants, biofuel producers, research facilities) is invited to participate in the survey.

The survey will take 5 – 10 minutes to complete, will be available until 18 September 2020 and all answers are confidential.
This EMPIR project will support the introduction of faster, more accurate calculations of calorific value for solid and liquid biofuels. New measurement methods will be studied, and advanced traceable measurement standards developed. Methods will be formulated for determining impurities and ash content, and moisture transfer standards and sampling methods will be devised, all to be evaluated by end-users. These outcomes will lead to opportunities for improved fuel quality control and comparability, that will support the transition to cleaner energy sources.
Jan Nielsen from DTI, and Coordinator of the project, said
‘This survey is important for the BIOFMET team in order to define the methodologies needed for end users to get traceability. It will help us to introduce an improved metrological framework and develop practical online measurement methods to characterise the key parameters of biofuel. Participation in the survey provides the opportunity for our stakeholders to influence developments and become actively engaged in BIOFMET.’
EMN for Energy Gases
The EURAMET European Metrology Networks (EMNs) aim to analyse the European and global metrology needs and address these needs in a coordinated manner.
The European Metrology Network for Energy Gases provides measurement science expertise to society and industry to support the implementation of the energy transition to renewable gaseous fuels. By bridging the gap between research and end-user communities and acting as a central nucleus for measurement science activities including EMPIR projects such as BIOFMET, the EMN for Energy Gases will facilitate a safe, reliable, and diverse energy network for the future.

This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
