Measuring distance with 9000 lasers

A new technique that uses around 9000 lasers to accurately measure long distances features in a paper published in Physical Review Letters. The work was carried out as part of the iMERA-Plus joint research project T3.J3.1 (Long distance) ‘Absolute Long Distance Measurement in Air’, which aimed to improve the current state of the art in long distance measurements between 10 and 1000 m, to reach a relative accuracy of 107. These improved measurements can be used in large scale production, to verify global mapping systems or in the waste management industry.
