Jörn Stenger is EURAMET’s new Chairperson

German Delegate started 3-year term at the General Assembly 2021

On Wednesday, 9 June, participants of EURAMET’s General Assembly online session witnessed the introduction of the new EURAMET Chairperson: Jörn Stenger from Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany’s National Metrology Institute, was elected at last year’s General Assembly and is now starting his 3-year term from 2021 to 2024.

During the hand over between Jörn Stenger and his predecessor Hans Arne Frøystein (JV, Norway), Jörn commented:

“I would like to thank Hans Arne for his outstanding commitment and achievements. Beyond the daily work with the secretariat and EURAMET bodies like the Board of Directors and Technical Committees, such as to keep the processes associated with the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement smoothly running, there were three key developments under his lead: the European Metrology Networks, the development of the EURAMET 2030 strategy and the new European Partnership on Metrology, which is close to conclusion. All three strengthen our association and are milestones on the way forward for EURAMET. I would say, this makes his term one of the most successful in EURAMET’s history.”

Jörn studied physics at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and finished his doctoral thesis in experimental nuclear and high-energy particle physics in 1995. After two postdoc years, he joined the group of professor Wolfgang Ketterle at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked on Bose-Einstein condensation.

In 1999 Jörn joined PTB, where he worked in optical clock metrology. In 2002 he joined the president’s staff and was appointed Member of the Presidential board in 2009. The focus of his tasks included international affairs and research programmes. In addition, Jörn was acting director of PTB’s ‘Ionizing Radiation’ division from 2016 to 2019.

“As EURAMET Chairperson I aim to take our achievements forward along our 2030 strategy. This will include stakeholder engagement, MRA support, and a smoothly running EURAMET governance. The envisaged start of the proposed European Partnership on Metrology will take place during my term, and I will support the development of the European Metrology Networks. In addition, there are two rather new key challenges for EURAMET: the digital transformation and the role of regulation. My aim is that EURAMET develops a coordinated and effective response to that.”

Jörn has been part of the EURAMET community since 2002. This included various roles, for example as German Delegate, member of the Board of Directors and chair of the EMRP/EMPIR Committee from 2010 to 2015.

“The most fundamental task I see is to underpin EURAMET’s value for members and its coherence and robustness. I would like to establish a regular, individual dialogue with all members to better understand their situations, interests and needs and include all their views in the joint development of EURAMET. Being EURAMET’s Chairperson is an honour for me and I’ll do my best to serve Europe’s metrology community.”

EURAMET welcomes Jörn Stenger in his new role and wishes him all the best for his term.
