EMPIR project workshop on the practice of measurement uncertainty evaluation

LNE to host a workshop in Paris, France on 21 - 22 January 2020

The Project

Measurement data influences decision making in almost all types of organisation, from manufacturing to medical diagnosis. To mitigate failures and assess risks effectively, it is essential to have an awareness of the uncertainty associated with measurements. EMPIR project ‘Advancing measurement uncertainty – comprehensive examples for key international standards’ (17NRM05, EMUE) is addressing this need by developing a set of examples that demonstrate methods for evaluating measurement uncertainty.

These examples will harmonise uncertainty evaluation practices across European industry in accordance with international standards and guides – namely, the Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM) and supplementary documents published by the Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology (JCGM).

The project is developing GUM-compliant examples of uncertainty evaluation practices that are adaptable to a wide range of applications. In this way, the project results will enable measurement practitioners to learn by example and improve uncertainty assessments – helping to support critical processes like thermal comfort in building and illegal substance testing in sports.

The workshop

On 21 – 22 January 2020, the project consortium will be presenting a workshop at the LNE (National Laboratory of Metrology and Testing) in Paris, France. The project consortium will present concrete examples at the workshop, to demonstrate how measurement uncertainty evaluation methods can support numerous disciplines – including energy, environment and healthcare.

Project researchers will give presentations on uncertainty evaluation methods that are relevant to a wide range of applications, in addition to highlighting the advantages and limitations of each method. The workshop will invite a discussion of best practice for uncertainty assessments, and ultimately, promote European harmonisation of uncertainty evaluation. 

Standards committees, accreditation bodies, regulators, calibration and testing laboratories, and measurement practitioners are invited to attend – in addition to any other interested parties.
