Award recognises excellence and innovation in the global anaerobic digestion and biogas sector
EMPIR project Metrology for biomethane (16ENG05, Biomethane) has recently won the ‘International knowledge exchange and collaboration’ award at the AD and Biogas Industry Awards. The project consortium was delighted with the award, as it reflects the excellent scientific collaboration that has been achieved in working together over the last three years.
The judges were impressed with the level of collaboration shown by the consortium and stated that the work in bringing traceability and standardisation to the biomethane industry is greatly needed. Every year, the awards celebrate excellence and innovation in the global anaerobic digestion and biogas sector. This year’s winners across 12 categories illustrated the increasingly international nature of the competition – with the successful entries ranging from the UK, Germany, Italy and France to Norway, India and Thailand.
This EMPIR project developed standardised test methods for key parameters, including impurities, to be monitored when biomethane is injected into the natural gas grid and used as a transport fuel. Measurement standards for these parameters will also enable calibration and measurement results that are traceable to the International System of Units (SI). The project liaised closely with the biogas industry, regulators and biomethane testing laboratories to ensure that the developed test methods are robust, efficient in use and can readily be implemented.
Lucy Culleton from NPL, who made the submission, said
‘This award highlights the value of collaborative research projects. The results we have achieved by working together have exceeded what would have been otherwise possible and has led to cutting edge scientific developments. The reference standards and standardised methods developed within the project will bring traceability to measurement of biomethane and dissemination activities have allowed us to share knowledge globally’.
