EMPIR project develops new pressure technique and publishes Metrologia paper

New technique provides the basis for additional new EMPIR project
The project
EMPIR project ‘Industrial standards in the intermediate pressure-to-vacuum range’ (14IND06, pres2vac) developed new pressure standards and calibration methods for absolute, positive and negative gauge pressures in the intermediate range.
Accurate control of pressures in industrial environments can prevent the spread of contaminants and improve efficiency in many industrial processes, such as those used in power plants, petrochemical and pharmaceutical production, and the storage of nuclear and toxic wastes.
Recent EU regulations restrict the use of mercury in barometers and sphygmomanometers for industrial and professional use, meaning that alternative methods for measuring pressure must be used.
This project developed new pressure standards and calibration methods for absolute, positive and negative gauge pressures. The results will increase the efficiency and safety of industrial processes, provide a basis for new technologies and reduce the risk of environmental contamination.
New technique leads to new standard
The project developed a new Fabry-Perot based refractometry technique, which provides the basis for a new pressure standard unit based on optical methods that will be designed within the recently started EMPIR project ‘Towards quantum-based realisations of the pascal’ (18SIB04, QuantumPascal).
Metrologia paper published
The project’s paper “Computation of the effective area and associated uncertainties of non-rotating piston gauges FPG and FRS” was published in the February 2019 issue of the leading international journal in pure and applied metrology Metrologia.
This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
