Medical decisions rely on accurate, informative and timely measurements. In fact, an estimated 70% of all medical decisions are based on in vitro diagnostics (IVDs); the essence of laboratory testing.

Metrological traceability is particularly vital for IVDs to provide accurate test results, irrespective of the laboratory or the instrumentation used for testing.

EURAMET’s European Metrology Network for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine has been placing metrological traceability at the heart of its work to establish a coordinated quality infrastructure that will help to ensure the accuracy and validity of medical diagnoses across Europe and beyond.

As illustrated by the global pandemic, rapid and reliable nucleic acid analyses are becoming increasingly important in healthcare. While quantitative real-time PCR results are widely used, they are not scientifically so easily comparable, leaving laboratory scientists to turn to digital PCRs and next-generation sequencing methods for diagnostics – procedures that often take up a lot of time.

To find a middle ground between scientific comparability and timeliness, the EMN has been designing commutable reference materials and procedures that can be used as common anchor points.
