Conference ‘Metrology for LNG’ international success

150 participants from all over the world attended the conference “Metrology for LNG” to discuss recent developments in and future needs of metrology for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).  Following the closure of the Joint Research Project (JRP) “Metrology for Liquefied Natural Gas” which was part of EURAMET’s European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) the conference was organized in Delft, The Netherlands (17 to 18 October 2013). Participants came from 27 countries, with delegations not only from Europe, but with significant numbers from Asia, Russia, Middle East or North and South America. “More than 75% of the participants came from industry. This is a great success and it shows that the value of our work is recognised by industry”, comments Oswin Kerkhof, JRP-Coordinator and deputy manager of R&D at VSL, The Netherlands.

Reliable, accurate and commonly agreed measurement methods are a first requirement for the trade of goods. For the large scale LNG distribution chain there is an agreed measurement practice as described in various ISO standards and in the GIIGNL “Custody transfer handbook”. In comparison with other commodities like gasoline the total uncertainty on measured quantity is high for LNG. The LNG industry is committed to improve the accuracy of instrumentation to reduce financial risks and to improve mass and energy balances. The development of calibration standards and accurate models for LNG flow, composition and density measurement contribute to this goal. Continuous improvement of measurement systems and the introduction of innovative technologies is the key.

The distribution chain is extending with LNG as transport fuel. For this application there is no commonly agreed measurement practice and the metrological framework is not yet in place. The roll-out of LNG as clean transport fuel requires the custody transfer measurements to be at par with traditional fuels.

The conference brought together engineers, researchers and manufacturers engaged in LNG measurements. Their presentations and posters explained the state of the art in LNG measurement techniques and applications. During the conference the results from the joint European research project “Metrology for Liquefied Natural Gas” were introduced as cornerstone for future developments.
