Award for kilogram redefinition paper
EMRP project partners win prize from scientific instrument makers’ guild
A publication by Stuart Davidson and Ian Robinson, both of NPL (UK), was awarded the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers' Prize for the best paper published by the Institute of Measurement and Control in 2014 on ‘the development or application of scientific instrumentation’.
The paper, Preparations for the forthcoming redefinition of the kilogram, was published in a special edition of the journal Measurement and Control, describing the proposed changes to the SI. Focusing on the kilogram, Stuart and Ian’s paper describes the reasons for the change, the innovations which have enabled the change to be made and the efforts to ensure that the transition to the new definition is as problem-free as possible.
Europe’s National Measurement Institutes, in collaboration with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), academia and industry, are undertaking the research necessary to ensure that the transition to the new kilogram - scheduled to take place in 2018 - is seamless. EMRP project NewKILO (SIB05) 'Developing a practical means of disseminating the new kilogram', coordinated by Stuart, aimed to provide a harmonised approach to the way in which the primary realisation experiments are compared and how the mass scale is disseminated following the redefinition.
