4 February 2019 is World Cancer Day

EURAMET supports projects that advance research in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer

World Cancer Day is an initiative under which the entire world can unite together in the fight against the global cancer epidemic. On 4 February each year more than one thousand organisations from 140 countries take part to show support and raise a collective voice.

With its European Metrology Research Programmes (EMRP and EMPIR) EURAMET supports a number of collaborative research projects that work to advance the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including those listed below.

Projects due to start work in 2019:

  • Standardisation of concentration measurements of extracellular vesicles for medical diagnoses (18HLT01, METVES II)
  • Metrology for advanced radiotherapy using particle beams with ultra-high pulse dose rates (18HLT04, UHDpulse)
  • Quantitative MR-based imaging of physical biomarkers (18HLT05, QUIERO)
  • Radiotherapy coupled with hyperthermia adapting the biological equivalent dose concept (18HLT06, RaCHy)

Tobias Schaeffter, convenor of the EURAMET task group on ‘Metrology for Health’ said ‘the treatment of cancer has significantly changed over the last decade by recognising that certain therapies work better for some people than for others. The European metrology community has addressed this challenge by investigating new quantitative measurement techniques in cancer diagnosis, and novel radiotherapy approaches to predict which patients are more likely to respond to therapies while reducing side effects.‘

EMPIR projects are co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.

EMRP joint research projects are part of EURAMET’s European Metrology Research Programme. The EMRP is jointly funded by the EMRP participating countries within EURAMET and the European Union.
