EMRP project IND56 Q-AIMDs uses a new technique to develop a novel material into a coating for urinary catheters

Within EMRP project IND56, 'Chemical metrology tools to support the manufacture of advanced biomaterials in the medical device industry', NPL and the University of Muenster developed a 3D SIMS analysis technique which has given a clearer understanding of the failure mechanism of coated catheters which resist bacterial attachment. This has allowed the University of Nottingham, another project participant, to develop the coating of novel urinary catheters with Camstent Ltd towards a medical device approval.

Novel coatings which resist bacterial attachment are anticipated to reduce device centred infections for urinary catheters and other medical devices such as endotracheal breathing tubes and venous catheters and to reduce the incidence of patient suffering and cost associated with healthcare acquired infections. Improved coatings will enable Europe to remain competitive by increasing the penetration of novel materials into the healthcare market and assuring quality and reproducibility of products.
