EURAMET supports projects that enable the good stewardship of fresh water
World Water Day is an annual United Nations event that highlights the importance of the supply of fresh water to the worldwide population.
With its European Metrology Research Programmes (EMRP and EMPIR) EURAMET supports a number of collaborative research projects that work to advance the sustainable management of fresh water resources.
Completed EMRP project Traceable measurements for monitoring critical pollutants under the European Framework Directive (ENV08, WFD) addressed the measurement requirements in the EU Directive for a group of toxic pollutants in water. Water pollution has a significant negative impact on human health and the environment, and improving the quality of rivers, lakes, groundwater and coastal waters is a priority for policymakers.
Currently running EMPIR project Metrology for real-world domestic water metering (17IND13, Metrowamet) is working to assess domestic water meters under realistic operation conditions, including typical water qualities (suspended particles, hardness, and pH), dynamic load changes, and general wear and tear. This will improve the accuracy of water consumption measurements and extend meter life, establishing their economic viability. In doing so, this should save consumers’ money and ultimately contribute to Europe’s pressing need to decrease its water consumption.
EMPIR projects are co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
EMRP joint research projects are part of EURAMET’s European Metrology Research Programme. The EMRP is jointly funded by the EMRP participating countries within EURAMET and the European Union.
