Happy Europe Day
Celebrating cooperation and partnership
On 9 May Europe is celebrating Europe Day. Later this month, between the 23rd and 26th May, the European Union will be holding its parliamentary elections - an opportunity to both illustrate and strengthen its cooperation and partnership and undertake world-leading programmes.
Collaboration is similarly vital for any scientific project, and no great discovery is achieved by one person or institute alone. Here at EURAMET, the value of sharing expertise, capacities and time underscores all of our work and the research programmes we facilitate. In being the focal point of measurement science across Europe, we also embody one of its integral principles - unity.
One of the most recent initiatives we have undertaken to continue the drive towards better partnership, communication, and harmonisation is the European Metrology Networks (EMNs). These are collaborative structures which go beyond joint research to increase the coordination of measurement science across Europe, addressing scientific and societal challenges, infrastructure and services. Currently, there are six EMNs; Mathematics and Statistics, Traceability for Laboratory Medicine, Quantum Technology, Smart Electricity Grids, Energy Gases, and Climate and Ocean Observation, and each will underpin regulation and standardisation by promoting best practice and disseminating knowledge in their respective fields.
As Europe aims to do, the EMNs will harness the best of individual to progress further, together. No doubt they will also help advance our European Metrology Research Programmes (EMRP and EMPIR) which are pooling the expertise of National Measurement Institutes and Designated Institutes from 28 European countries.
To all our members, from Iceland to Malta, we’d like to say thank you for continued collaboration and contributions to enhancing measurement science and creating impact through research excellence. Happy Europe Day.
