EURAMET projects drive forward standardisation of environmental measurement
Three EURAMET projects have developed and are currently developing measurement methods and guidelines that will be included in draft documentary standards. These CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) standards will support the EU Industrial Emissions Directive; the measurement methods to enforce these directives are not yet fully in place.
Project Innovative metrology for pollution regulation of emissions from stacks and area sources (ENV60), completed in 2017, has provided input to three draft CEN documentary standards.
The following two projects are currently developing methods that will be incorporated into CEN standards:

- Metrology for air pollutant emissions (16ENV08 IMPRESS 2)
Project coordinators from NPL recently presented the work of these three collaborative projects to the CEN Technical Committee on Air Quality, TC 264, which is the standardisation committee responsible for all European documentary standards on emissions to air and ambient air measurements.
This presentation forms part of the process of incorporating the measurement methods developed in the projects into draft documentary standards, which will eventually be published as European Standards. In the future measurements covered by these standards will have to follow the methods developed in the projects.
The standards will enable regulators, process plant operators, manufacturers and measurement service providers to comply with emission limits and monitoring requirements, supporting efforts to ensure cleaner air across Europe for the benefit of public health and the environment.
EMRP joint research projects are part of EURAMET's European Metrology Research Programme. The EMRP is jointly funded by the EMRP participating countries within EURAMET and the European Union.
EMPIR projects are co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
Contacts for technical questions regarding ENV60 IMPRESS, 15NRM01 Sulf-Norm and 16ENV08 IMPRESS 2 are Garry Hensey, Marc Coleman and Rod Robinson.
