Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe

Every year on 9 May it's Europe Day, commemorating the 1950 'Schuman declaration' which paved the way for the founding of the European Union.

At a speech in Paris, French foreign minister Robert Schuman, introduced an idea for a new political cooperation in Europe: to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. His vision was to make war between Europe's nations unthinkable by merging economic interests to raise living standards as the first step towards a more integrated and peaceful Europe.

Cross-border cooperation, with the aim of fostering trade and prosperity, has always been crucial for measurement science and the measurement community. Reliable measurements are essential for innovation in economies and societies.

Meeting increasing demands for greater measurement accuracy is only achievable through international cooperation between individual National Measurement Institutes.

EURAMET stands for close collaboration in European measurement

EURAMET and its members stand for closer collaboration in European measurement as demonstrated by EURAMET's very successful European Metrology Research Programmes (EMRP and EMPIR), jointly funded by the European Union and participating EURAMET member countries.

These programmes enable the European measurement community, industrial organisations and academia to collaborate in joint research projects, so far more than 270 have been funded.
This research addresses societal grand challenges in health, environment and energy with their research outputs already being adopted by industries throughout Europe.
