Interest in redefined kelvin intensifies
Work from EMRP and EMPIR project on the redefinition of the Kelvin highlighted through invited talks and papers
The SI unit of temperature – the kelvin – is planned to be redefined in terms of the Boltzmann constant, which relates energy at the individual particle level with temperature. This redefinition, along with other recent advances in temperature metrology, will enable a fundamental change in the way we measure temperature. EMRP project Implementing the new Kelvin (SIB01 InK) and following EMPIR project Implementing the new Kelvin 2 (15SIB02) address the outstanding high-priority issues in temperature measurement. The methods and data generated are being used to prepare the international measurement community for the forthcoming redefinition.
The planned redefinition of the SI is one of the highlights for metrology this decade and there has been much interest in the redefined kelvin. The coordinator was invited to present work from the two projects at the 6th Spanish Congress of Metrology in June and will give another invited talk at the 18th Metrologie Congress, held in Paris from the 19 to 21 September 2017, as well as at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Institute of Physics and Chemistry) in Beijing in October 2017. In addition, the coordinator has been invited by Measurement, Science and Technology journal to write a review article on the redefined kelvin.
