Royal Society meeting led by EMRP project partner “Towards implementing the new kelvin”

Participants in Royal Society meeting “Towards the new kelvin”

Leading researchers in thermometry gathered at the Royal Society meeting to discuss EMRP project SIB01 “Implementing the new kelvin”

On the 18th-19th May 2015 about 50 leading researchers in thermometry from around the world gathered at the Royal Society International Centre at Chicheley Hall to discuss progress towards implementing the new kelvin ahead of the SI redefinition in 2018.

The meeting was organised and led by Graham Machin, Chair of EURAMET's Technical Committee for Thermometry, and strongly linked to the EMRP project SIB01 'Implementing the new kelvin' (InK). There were 16 talks and the purpose of the meeting was to take stock of the current state of primary thermometry research (primarily conducted through SIB01) and identify the future research required to: a) ensure a smooth implementation of the unit following the redefinition in 2018, b) support the evolving mise en pratique for the definition of the kelvin (MeP-K) and c) identify requirements for future temperature scale, the ITS202x, possibly to be established in the mid-2020s.

A summary of the meeting will appear shortly in Measurement and a record of the meeting will be published in a special edition of Phil Trans A edited by Graham Machin to appear in early 2016.
