EMPIR project develops measurement capabilities for industry
European electrical power industry already benefitting from recently completed project
Recently completed EMPIR project Metrology for the electrical power industry (14IND08 ElPow) aimed to develop the measurement capability needed to prove the quality of equipment for high-voltage grids, and help to maintain the competitiveness of the European high-voltage electrical power industry.
The outputs of the project include the following new and extended internationally recognised Calibration and Measurement Capabilities:
- Measurement of losses at high voltage, high current and low power factor, which will benefit power transformer manufacturers and support the EU Eco-Design Directive that establishes a framework to set mandatory ecological requirements for energy-using and energy-related products.
- Measurement of fast current transients, which will benefit industry measuring fast current impulses, such as found in transformer testing and in high-voltage DC-converter development and testing.
- Calibration of lightning impulse voltage measurement systems at ultra-high voltage levels, which will benefit manufacturers of ultra-high voltage equipment for power transmission grids.
- Calibration of measuring systems for insulator puncture testing.
These Calibration and Measurement Capabilities are expected to be used by manufacturers and energy agencies across Europe.
This EMPIR project is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
