EMPIR project researchers are recognised for their work on nanoparticle characterisation.

Nanoparticles, due to their unique and tuneable properties, are ideal for a wide variety of potential applications and are increasingly being used in commercial products. EMPIR project 14IND12 Metrology for innovative nanoparticles (Innanopart) will provide industry with certified reference materials and primary standards for measurement of the nanoparticle concentration and surface chemistry, which is needed to ensure nanomaterial performance and reliability.

The project received high accolades for the work on innovative nanoparticles, despite only being at an early stage. Two consortium members received best poster prizes: David Cant, NPL, received the Castle prize for best poster for his presentation ‘Calculation of Shell Thicknesses for Core-Shell-Shell Nanoparticles from XPS Data’ at the UK Surface Analysis Forum (UKSAF); Natalie Belsey, NPL, won best poster at an IOP meeting on nanoparticle characterisation for the poster ‘A VAMAS inter-laboratory study of the Measurement of Chemistry and Thickness of Nanoparticle Coatings’.
