Establishing SI traceable electrical units by using the potential of graphene

EMPIR project Graphene impedance quantum standard (18SIB07, GIQS) is working to establish a new primary standard for impedance, a measure of the total opposition that an electric circuit presents to time-varying electric current. The new standard will be linked to the revised SI units – something that the project aims to achieve by exploiting the quantum Hall effect of graphene.

Specifically, the project is developing methods to combine new digital impedance measurement bridges with graphene-based quantum Hall devices in a simplified cryogenic environment. This will support a cheaper and easier-to-operate primary standard, as well as more affordable and improved measurement services. The project will also help to link other electrical units to the revised SI units, fostering the development of novel technological devices for faster and more sensitive measurement methods.

During the upcoming online workshop, project partners will describe research progress and results with stakeholders, scientists and technicians working in the field of electrical metrology.
