Open consultation on Metrology for Smart Electricity Grids

16 & 25 November and 1 December 2021; 10:00 - 12:00 CET

Stakeholder consultation of the European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids

Smart electricity grids are becoming an increasingly central focus of European Union Green Deal objectives to secure a sustainable energy future. As flexible, decentralised yet interconnected electricity networks, smart grids hold the potential to increase the reliability and efficiency of electricity supplies, and to optimise our uptake of renewable energy resources.

EURAMET’s European Metrology Network for Smart Electricity Grids is working to support these very goals. To hear directly from their stakeholder community, the network is launching a series of workshops. By taking part in these sessions, stakeholders will be able to shape the network's strategic research agenda and steer future metrology research.

Session overview:

During all sessions stakeholders are invited to share and discuss any measurement science needs related to smart electricity grids. In addition, each session will provide the opportunity to exchange views on a specific topic, introduced by a short keynote address.

DateSession

Tuesday, 16 November 2021; 10:00 - 12:00 CET

Measurement challenges related to smart electricity grids (Session 1)
including a discussion on DC grids and HV testing

Keynote
Dr Mathieu Caujolle, EDF, Electricité de France: DC grid challenges

Due to the transition to decentralised grid systems, DC grids play an increasingly important role. The keynote will address technical needs related to DC systems (generation, storage and conversion) and discuss DC measurement challenges.

Thursday, 25 November 2021; 10:00 - 12:00 CET

Measurement challenges related to smart electricity grids (Session 2)
including a discussion on Digital transformation and cybersecurity

Keynote
Prof Mihaela Albu, Politehnica University of Bucharest: Modelling and data analytics in smart grids

Extracting the essence of smart grid big data will be key to successful grid management. The keynote will address how modelling and data analytics helps to provide meaningful information from collected measurement data.

Wednesday, 1 December 2021; 10:00 - 12:00 CET

Measurement challenges related to smart electricity grids (Session 3)
including a discussion on Measurements of grid signals

Keynote
Prof Mario Paolone, EPFL, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne: Measuring power grid signals in the presence of reduced system inertia

As the share of electricity from renewables increases, the intrinsic inertia of the grid goes down affecting the grid frequency dynamics. The keynote will address metrology needs to support the modelling of grid signals for stability control.
