Strengthening Radiation Safety Across Europe
Welcome to the newsletter of the European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection (EMN Radiation Protection), the central contact point for measurement capabilities supporting radiation safety frameworks across Europe.
This issue reports on the network’s active participation in the upcoming Radiation Protection Week 2026 in Berlin, Germany, highlights the EMN’s strategic membership in the Occupational Radiation Protection Network (ORPNET), and spotlights the MetroPOEM project’s new training videos and certified reference materials. The newsletter also features educational advancements with the integration of GuideRadPROS e-learning materials into the IAEA-ORPNET platform. Enjoy reading!
Annette Röttger, Chair of EMN Radiation Protection, comments: “At its core, radiation protection addresses the issue of an invisible and often feared hazard posed by ionising radiation applied in medicine and technology. European policy cannot function without absolute trust in the accuracy of measured data. Metrology provides this trust through traceable measurements and harmonised procedures, thereby verifying safety claims.”
Yours sincerely, The EMN Radiation Protection Team

ERPW 2026 in Berlin
Berlin, Germany | 5 – 9 October 2026
The EMN Radiation Protection is taking the stage at this year’s European Radiation Protection Week! After an introduction by EMN Chair Annette Röttger, the session provides direct, practical insights into modern radiation metrology through three expert talks: on proving compliance with legal metrology requirements using risk assessment, on the type testing of radiation protection dosimeters in Germany, and on taking dosimeters from development to routine use, focusing on standards and measurement uncertainties.

Stronger Together: The EMN’s membership in the “Occupational Radiation Protection Network”
In a major step towards harmonising European safety standards, the EMN for Radiation Protection has officially joined the Occupational Radiation Protection Network. This strategic membership closes a critical gap, linking primary metrology research directly with practical workplace safety applications. The collaboration will ensure that workers in medical, industrial, and nuclear sectors benefit from the most accurate and validated dosimetry solutions available.
