Protecting European citizens from the risks of ionising radiation
Radiation exposure from the environment affects all people across the world but more than 22 million people are also exposed to additional ionising radiation in the workplace. As applications for radiation – such as medical imaging and therapies, nuclear energy, manufacturing and new technologies – continue to develop, the risk of exposure increases. This is addressed by EU legislation outlining basic standards for safety, such as exposure limits, dose assessment and activity concentrations, but requires metrological support to ensure compliance.
The European Metrology Network (EMN) for Radiation Protection aims to act as a single point of contact for the metrological requirements of radiation protection. The EMN is working to facilitate coordination across Europe between metrology institutes, labs and stakeholders, and addresses the need for a harmonised and sustainable metrology infrastructure.
Annette Röttger, the EMN Chair, comments: “The EMN aims to support European legislation and operators with reliable data, including uncertainties, and wishes to express clearly where such reliable data is not available. We will jointly use our national capacities to overcome the existing gaps.
For the future we aim to provide quality assurance and expertise for measurements in exposure situations addressed under the European legislation. Moreover, we see the need to raise awareness about the shortcoming in radiation protection funding of the past and to change the steering process for the future.”
