From 26 - 30 September 2022, the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) and World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) are hosting a week-long online workshop on 'Metrology for Climate Action' - with support from EURAMET and the European Metrology Network for Climate and Ocean Observation (EMN COO).

The workshop is open to experts and stakeholders who are active the field of climate science, greenhouse gas mitigation, measurement science, and other related areas. Following on from a previous joint BIPM-WMO event in 2010, this event aims to improve collaboration between climate observation experts and the global metrology community, to support climate mitigation and emissions reductions over the next decade and beyond.

Workshop Themes

The workshop will address two main themes; metrology in support of the physical science basis of climate change, and metrology as integral to operational systems that estimate greenhouse gas emissions based on accurate measurements.

Emma Woolliams, Chair of the EMN for Climate and Ocean Observation, elaborates:

“For Theme 1, we’ll be looking at observations of the actual climate – from raw instrument observation through processing into ‘essential climate variables’. These are various quantities defined by GCOS (Global Climate Observing System) as useful in testing climate models. Climate models are used to forecast progression of the climate and inform high-level policymaking.

[Theme 2 will focus on supporting the implementation of climate mitigation policies.] Such policies might be rules to reduce carbon emissions, innovation funding to help decarbonise society, encouragement for social change, or changes to land use like planting trees. It might be a policy put in place by international organisations like the UN — such as committing to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030."

All participants of the workshop are invited to interact with the organisers / speakers and help to develop the workshop’s results.

A key objective of the event is to develop a report with recommendations on how the different communities collaborate to support climate action.

After registration, participants can contribute to the meeting results by:

  • commenting on posters and pre-recorded presentations using the online chat feature on the event website;
  • participating in the virtual poster fair (27 and 28 September); and
  • by joining in the discussions on 29 and 30 September that will identify recommendations.

EURAMET's Virtual Pavilion

As an official event partner, EURAMET will be hosting a virtual pavilion as part of the poster fair. Through this contribution, we aim to highlight the support provided by Europe's metrology community in the field of climate science.

We hope to see you there!
