Strategic Reseach Agenda

The EU aims to be climate neutral by 2050 – an objective that will require Europe to gradually decarbonise several key sectors of its economy. Among other sources of renewable energy, low carbon fuels like biogases and hydrogen are expected to play a key role in Europe’s energy transition; a change that will also inevitably lead to new challenges for the energy gases industry.

To ensure a smooth and successful energy transition, EURAMET has established a dedicated European Metrology Network for Energy Gases (EMN EG) to provide a central nucleus of measurement science expertise for the whole of Europe, concerning the increasing utilisation of renewable gaseous fuels.

Towards the end of last year, the EMN published the first version of its Strategic Research Agenda, which will serve as an essential reference point to guide the network's current and future metrological research activities.

Stakeholder discussions have shaped the report's findings and helped to prioritise energy gas measurement challenges and needs, from flow metering to gas quality measurements, so that the EMN can provide an effective foundation of metrological support for Europe’s renewable energy transition.
