Instrument transformers (ITs), optimised for 50 Hz use, need to be characterised to find the ratio and phase errors at various frequencies across the desired 9 kHz measurement range as required for power quality measurements in medium voltage power systems. This involves:

  • Suitable reference measuring systems for ITs and validated methods for the evaluation of the relevant uncertainty contributions of ITs to Power Quality (PQ) indices.
  • Establishment of traceable test procedures for reference setups to calibrate industrial ITs used for PQ measurements, by covering limits of PQ disturbances of the relevant standards of IEC 61000 and EN 50160.
  • Evaluation of the ITs performance based on the worked-out PQ indices.

The reference measuring systems shall allow calibration of ITs up to 2 kA for currents and up to 36 kV for the voltage with basic uncertainties of below 0.005 % and 0.005 crad. Based on the requirements for ITs according to the IEC 61869 series of standards, the existing measuring systems for digital ITs developed in 17IND06 “FutureGrid II”,  are adapted and refined for the establishment of the required reference measuring systems for all available kinds of ITs with a bandwidth of up to 9 kHz. Test procedures and metrics related to the PQ indices are being provided to quantify IT performance.

Using a representative set of instrument transformer samples, their behaviour will be assessed with the realised calibration systems using the worked-out PQ performance indices.

To support industry, IT manufacturers and calibration laboratories, simplified test procedures and calibration setups need to be studied, analysed and built-up with integration of the metrics of the PQ indices. The realised simplified measuring systems will need to be compared with the developed references to verify the validity of the simplifying approach adopted.
