Definitions of parameters and waveforms for testing DC electricity meters

Power Quality (PQ) is well established in traditional AC grids, however widely accepted and standardised methods for measuring PQ aspects for DC metering or PQ measurement methods for DC grids (DCPQ) are not currently available.

Power Quality (PQ) is well established in traditional AC grids, however widely accepted and standardised methods for measuring PQ aspects for DC metering or PQ measurement methods for DC grids (DCPQ) are not currently available.

In order to define new DCPQ parameters, it is necessary to observe and analyse typical static and dynamic disturbances that occur on DC grids.  This data can be obtained from computer simulations, grid emulations, laboratory testing, and measurement in real working DC grids.  Algorithms are used to parametrize the raw data so that levels of DCPQ can be compared and assessed in terms of their potential harm to operations of the grids or connected equipment. Ultimately, these parameters and algorithms will form the basis of future normative standardisation procures to control the build-up of DCPQ.

DCPQ also affects the metering of DC energy for revenue collection. Certain DCPQ events will induce meter errors, so typical waveforms to test the immunity of meters to the typical DCPQ environment are required for the future type approval of DC meters.
