Metrological framework for power quality surveys in DC

The EMC framework requires power system operators to maintain an agreed level of disturbance on their network known as the compatibility level.

Dawn at a solar power plant

Coordinator: Helko E. van den Brom

The EMC framework requires power system operators to maintain an agreed level of disturbance on their network known as the compatibility level.  Certain levels of disturbance below the compatibility level can be generally expected and international standards aimed at manufacturers of equipment that is connected to the low voltage (LV), use the compatibility level to set so-called ‘immunity levels’ for connected equipment to guarantee compatibility, i.e., reliable performance unaffected by interference.  Power system operators use planning levels to design networks and plan for new connections that will increase the level of disturbance. The planning level is always lower than the compatibility level, so power system operators maintain a conservative ‘head-room’ between the two levels.

Compatibility levels and planning levels are well-established concepts for AC grids, but the whole EMC framework for LVDC grids is yet to be formulated and agreed.  To aid this process new DC PQ equipment, methodologies, and procedures, that can be used by power system operators to determine the compatibility level on their network, are needed.  Such equipment will be used on-site to conduct planning level surveys of DC PQ parameters over a long period of time.
