Expertise in the EMN includes the physical and chemical characteristics renewable gases require to enter existing natural gas grids or to be qualified for energy storage, as well as the quality of hydrogen as a fuel source for long distance transportation.

The European Metrology Network for Energy Gases
A long-term goal of the European Union is to move towards decarbonised energy systems. As such, it has set a target for renewable sources to account for 32% of total energy production by 2030. The European Metrology Network (EMN) for Energy Gases has been launched by EURAMET to facilitate this transition to a sustainable energy future, by providing a central point for solving the major measurement challenges raised by the diversification of energy gases, and the need for safe gas storage and carbon sequestration.
On 22 January 2020, the NPL is hosting a European energy gases workshop on behalf of the EMN – to be held at the NPL centre in Teddington, UK. This free, one-day workshop will run from 9am - 5pm and lunch will be included.
The workshop will support the EMN with its initial steps to explore current and future measurement challenges within energy gas industries. Experts from industry, academia, the government and the metrology community are invited to attend the event to discuss a wide range of energy gas topics – including decarbonising the gas grid, hydrogen vehicles, and carbon capture and storage.
The EMN Chair, Annarita Baldan, says, “I am looking forward to this event. The workshop will be a good opportunity to discuss with experts and industrial parties current and future European energy gases scenarios, to identify the bottlenecks and to prioritise together which measurement challenges need to be addressed in the short and long-term.”
The workshop discussions will contribute to the EMN’s Strategic Research Agenda, forming the basis of measurement infrastructure harmonisation that will support Europe’s energy transition.
