The European Metrology Network for Energy Gases

Environmental sustainability has long been at the heart of the European Union’s objectives.

To ensure environmental responsibility is tied in with sustainable development, it is vital to establish a reliable and diverse energy network for Europe, and to firmly make room for renewable gases as a fuel source. EURAMET’s European Metrology Network (EMN) for Energy Gases is working to provide measurement science expertise to industry experts, supporting the security and efficiency of this energy transition to renewable gaseous fuels.

The network is fostering robust and accurate measurements that are traceable to well-established, internationally-accepted standards; to ensure the safety and reliability of renewable gaseous fuels. By bridging the gap between research and end-user communities, and taking specific stakeholder needs into account, the EMN is taking important steps towards establishing a sustainable, zero-carbon economy.

Take part now in a survey to help assess biofuel industry's needs

As part of its clean fuel strategy, the EU is focused on implementing biofuels as a viable, alternative source of energy. An EMPIR project, ‘BIOFMET’, is working to improve biofuel quality control & measurement accuracy to support this energy transition. Recently, the project has launched a stakeholder survey – to hear from the biofuel industry directly about their measurement needs.

NPL hosts European energy gas workshop for key stakeholders

At the start of the year, the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) hosted a workshop on behalf of EURAMET’s EMN for Energy Gases. The event successfully brought together a wide range of experts to discuss the potential measurement challenges facing the energy gas industry as Europe begins to decarbonise. While many EMPIR projects are working to address top-priortiy metrological needs, there is still a way to go to fulfil all of the industry's requirements.

First standard for dynamic measurement of refrigerated hydrocarbon fluids published

Liquefied natural & bio-gases are alternative, clean fuel contenders that have the potential to reduce emissions of harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides. Technological innovations in recent years have made these fuels more readily available, but the EU’s clean fuel strategy is dedicated to furthering their widespread use.

Research completed as part of the EMPIR project 'Metrology for LNG' has resulted in a new a standard for the dynamic measurement of refrigerated hydrocarbon fluids.

Welcome to Justervesenet: the 17th member of the EMN for Energy Gases

Justervesenet (JV), the National Metrology Institute of Norway, has recently joined EURAMET’s network for energy gases. The institute already plays an important role in disseminating metrological traceability to industry through calibration and reference materials for energy gas quantities.

In particular, JV has established a primary standard for the flow measurement of hydrogen gas for fuel, elevating the institute to membership status in the Norwegian Hydrogen Association. As a new EMN member, JV will continue to provide metrological support for the EU's new Green Deal.

Joint Research Projects under EMPIR Call 2019 related to Energy Gases:

Building on EMPIR project MetroHyVe, this project will develop a metrological, traceable framework for testing hydrogen dispensing meters at HRS. The newly-developed capabilites will ensure fuel quality is compliant with legislation - a crucial step in unlocking the wider deployment of hydrogen in heavy-duty European road transport.

This project will develop standards-based solutions to support advanced hydrogen storage technologies. The underpinning metrology developed by this JRP will encourage industry and investor confidence for the roll-out of new infrastructure - supporting Europe's transition to the large-scale use of hydrogen as an energy source. 

 

EMPIR Call 2020 Stage 2

Stage 2 of EMPIR Call 2020 is open with some Selected Research Topics (SRTs) relevant to Energy Gases. The deadline for submitting project proposals is 28 September 2020.

  • Sustainable advanced flow meter calibration for transport sector - This SRT focuses on traceable measurement and characterisation of alternative fuel flow meters in cars, trucks and the maritime sector. A fuel property matrix will be prepared, and metrological input will be provided for further development of international standards.
  • Metrology for SI-traceable biomethane conformity assessment - This SRT aims at developing cost-effective traceable gas transfer standards for impurities specified in EN16723 standards. Collaboration with ISO/TC193/SC1/WG25 “Biomethane” will ensure outputs from this project are aligned with the committee’s needs.

Forthcoming Events

North Sea Flow Measurement Workshop - 26 - 29 October 2020

For the first time, the North Sea Flow Measurement Workshop will be a virtual event. This single most important event in the flow measurement calendar has been widened to include measuring for the energy transition with low carbon energy and downstream businesses.
