Climate and Ocean Observation | Newsletter Issue 1 | 20 December 2019

Thank you for your interest in and support of the European Metrology Network for Climate and Ocean Observation in 2019.

The EMN for Climate and Ocean Observation aims to bring together all those involved in making or using climate observations, including metrologists from Europe’s National Metrology Institutes and Designated Institutes.

The network represents the European contribution to a global effort to bring the concepts of metrology, or the science of measurement, to observations of essential climate and ocean variables - where metrology plays a critical role in establishing robust, interoperable and stable observational records, in addition to enabling users to judge their fitness-for-purpose.

Our EMN was established in 2019, and in 2020, we will be defining a strategic research agenda that will influence the research and service provision priorities of Europe’s metrology community.

The strategic research agenda will be collaborative and include the insight of climate observation experts, with the aim to respond to the community’s real needs.

We are currently carrying out a review of community needs, comprising of an online survey and a follow-up set of webinars - or interactive sessions - that will enable us to prioritise our stakeholders’ requirements.

The webinar sessions will take place on 12-13 February 2020. If you haven’t had a chance to take our survey yet, please do so now. To contribute to the prioritisation, please also register to take part in the webinars.

Please note that we originally advertised the 12 - 13 February webinars as a workshop to take place at the NPL in the UK. However, following popular demand and a desire by many to reduce their travel and carbon footprint, we have upgraded the workshop into webinar sessions.

We hope this will encourage greater participation, and we will be using the most up-to-date tools available to make the webinars as interactive as possible. Register to take part in the webinars now, and we will send you more information in the new year.

Yours,
The EMN for Climate and Ocean Observation
