EMPIR project on the Internet of Things works to understand stakeholder needs

Communication and validation of smart data in IoT-networks

Communication and validation of smart data in IoT-networks

For the increasing number of networked measurement devices used in science and industry, reliable interoperability is a key issue: without a shared, universal communications format, incorrectly interpreted and unsecure digital data pose significant risks to users of measurement data. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the fast-growing global network of WiFi-enabled smart devices and computers.

EMPIR project Communication and validation of smart data in IoT-networks (17IND02, SmartCom)  is working to define a digital format for the secure transmission and unambiguous interpretation of measurement-related data used in science and technology; devices adopting the new communications protocol will, for example, have to employ SI units (the international system of units). With guidelines developed from this project, international standards organisations and industry will be able to adopt a secure and reliable communications format in the digital age.

The project consortium has presented this work at a series of different events, in order to ensure that stakeholder needs are fully understood and that the outputs of the project are taken up by industry.

  • The need for a “metadata format for SI based transmission of metrological data” was presented at a meeting of CIPM in March 2019 and also a meeting of the Consultative Committee for Units at CIPM in October 2019. As a result, an international expert group within CIPM (Decision CIPM/108-28) was established to discuss an internationally harmonised digital SI.
  • DCC workshop 2019 in cooperation with leading DCC experts from PTB was held at PTB in June 2019. The event was attended by more than 120 representatives from industry, calibration laboratories, and German national accreditation bodies, including DKD and DAkkS.
  • A second stakeholder event on “The development of digital calibration certificates within the SmartCom project” was held at NPL in November 2019. The event was attended by representatives of twelve industrial and educational organisations, including UKAS and Trescal, as well as NPL staff with a keen interest in developments relating to digital calibration certificates.
  • The IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Industry 4.0 & IoT held in Rome, Italy in June 2020 was deployed to give the participants a better understanding of the infrastructure for DCCs and the universal metadata model for metrological complex quantities.

Wiebke Heeren from PTB, and project coordinator said

‘Regular and direct communication with our stakeholders is very important for our project to develop solutions that will have impact in the real world. It has been very motivating to experience the positive reception and vital interest in DCC development.’
