The two bodies will strengthen their collaboration to enhance energy gas research

EURAMET has signed a formal liaison with the European Gas Research Group (GERG) on 16 November 2022.

The European Metrology Network (EMN) for Energy Gases, operating under EURAMET, which has been established to share knowledge and support measurement science for energy gas applications across Europe, will be collaborating with GERG across a number of key areas.

GERG is a global network of European energy experts, working to identify the most relevant issues for each major sector of the gas industry.

It shares common goals of supporting European energy to keep it secure and competitive as production transitions to new, renewable sources and a sustainable future.

“The Memorandum of Understanding between GERG and EURAMET is a very important next step in bringing together our research communities and building on our very successful cooperation to date,” Robert Judd, General Secretary of GERG, says. “Metrology is a central pillar of our GERG research roadmaps, and we must develop a common understanding of metrology needs to make the transition to new energy gases real.”

The main ambitions of the collaboration are:

  • to inform each other on measurement needs of research and development for energy gases, including any knowledge gaps that appear as new technological developments are made
  • to exchange knowledge on energy gases measurement technologies, methods, and metrological aspects, including standards, calibrations, and uncertainty assessments

“The European energy infrastructure faces unprecedented challenges,” says Jörn Stenger, chairperson of EURAMET. “The transition towards a resilient, green, and more independent energy supply is urgently needed. This strongly affects the European gas grid.

GERG and EURAMET signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their cooperation. Within EURAMET, the European Metrology Network for Energy Gases, plays a key role in this cooperation. We are glad about this key strategic development and look forward to jointly supporting research and development.”

The liaison is taking place to facilitate collaboration between the two bodies, opening up new opportunities and pathways for support and cooperation.

“Our initial engagement with GERG has successfully led to the involvement of this group in research projects under the European Partnership on metrology programme and covering hydrogen, biomethane and carbon sequestration and usage,” says EMN Energy Gases chair Annarita Baldan.

“We are very happy to strengthen the cooperation with the MoU, that will help a more systematic exchange of research and measurement needs among the parties and a closer interaction with the energy gas industry and gas grid operators.”
