BIPM and WMO Metrology for Climate Action Workshop to identify measurement requirements and barriers to effective action

Pre-registration is open for the Metrology for Climate Action Workshop 2022, hosted by Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on 26 to 30 September 2022.

The free-to-attend week-long online event will examine progress and future requirements for metrologists to support climate change science, and identify gaps in provision and barriers to effective mitigation of climate change and impacts.

Outputs will include recommendations on identified priority technical challenges for metrology for the coming decade.

The workshop is open to experts actively engaged in climate science, earth observation, modelling, greenhouse gas mitigation, measurement and measurement science, and willing to contribute to developing recommendations on important metrology technical challenges in these fields.

EURAMET is delighted to announce its partnership status for the event, and that Emma Woolliams, Chair of the Climate and Ocean Observation European Metrology Network, will co-chair its workshop theme 1: metrology in support of the physical science basis of climate change and climate observations.

Theme 2 will cover metrology supporting monitoring and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and natural sinks.

Confidence in data, confidence in trends

For EURAMET, the workshop will be an opportunity to build awareness of European Metrology Networks (EMN) within broader climate science communities.

The Climate and Ocean Observation network is one of nine such EMNs currently developing specific research agendas for Europe’s National Metrology Institutes and Designated Institutes. Other networks that have a bearing on climate issues include Advanced Manufacturing, Climate and Ocean Observation, Energy Gases, Radiation Protection and Smart Electricity Grids. Each will be looking to make connections and show the value of ongoing research activities.

As Emma Woolliams, Climate and Ocean Observation Chair, put it,

“Networks for Advanced Manufacturing, Energy Gases, and Smart Electricity Grids look at the human side: reducing human impacts on the environment. Our EMN provides the metrology that supports confidence in the climate data that serve two feedback loops. The first provides answers to policymakers to questions like, are we reducing our emissions and improving our land management to mitigate climate change in a way that matches our political commitments? The second is a longer feedback loop, using observations and modelling data to support climate science and thus our understanding of how the Earth is changing in response to those emissions. Providing confidence in data is where metrology comes into its own…. helping users of data to understand and ensure trends they’re seeing have robust foundations”.

Updates on how to register, and on a developing schedule of themes and topics, will be publicised as available.

Metrologists and meteorologists working together

BIPM was established by the Metre Convention, through which member states act together on matters related to measurement science and measurement standards.

WMO is the specialised agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences.

The two bodies cooperate to raise awareness within WMO of issues of metrological traceability and measurement uncertainty, ensure the appropriate use of the International System of Units (the SI) within the WMO measurement networks, and demonstrate degrees of equivalence between measurement standards maintained in the WMO networks and National Metrology Institutes.
