Thermal project inputs into new European measurement standard
Project outputs support the development of new European measurement standard EN 15548-1.
Thermal protection materials have advanced recently with thinner, lighter and stronger materials providing a thermal performance several times better, than conventional insulation materials. However there is lack of confidence and investment from manufacturers due to an inability to demonstrate their performance for certification.
Results from EMRP project SIB52 Metrology for thermal protection materials have been used in discussions with CEN/TC 89 WG14 to both facilitate amendments to CEN/TS 15548-1 and to convert this technical specification into a European standard (prEN 15548-1).
The standard entitled ‘Thermal insulation products for building equipment and industrial installations - Determination of thermal resistance by means of the guarded hot plate method - Measurements at elevated temperatures from 100 °C to 850 °C’ will allow European manufacturers to meet the mandatory CE marking requirements and market their high-temperature insulation products.
