Graham Machin gives keynote presentation at major temperature conference

Keynote presentation at Temperature 2015 in Russia covers the work of EMRP project InK (SIB01) on implementing the new kelvin.

Professor Graham Machin, of NPL and Chair of EURAMET's Technical Committee for Thermometry, was the invited keynote speaker at the Temperature 2015 conference held in April 2015 in St Petersburg, Russia. Graham’s presentation focussed on the work of EMRP project InK 'Implementing the new kelvin' of which he is coordinator.The upcoming redefinition of the kelvin in terms of the Boltzmann constant will enable a fundamental change in the way we measure temperature. InK aims to improve primary thermometry at temperatures ranging from 0.0009 K to over 3000 K and assign definitive thermodynamic temperatures to a set of high temperature fixed points for the first time. This will allow extreme temperature measurements to be linked to a direct realisation of the kelvin.Temperature 2015 brought together more than 250 researchers in the field of temperature measurement and covered a wide variety of topics, from the fundamentals of thermometry to temperature measurement challenges in industry. The conference provided an opportunity to develop stronger links between the respective COOMET (the Euro-Asian Co-operation of National Metrological Institutions) and EURAMET thermometry research communities.
