Science for breakfast: Nobel Prize Winner supports new European Metrology Programme

Representatives from key European institutions such as the European Parliament, the European Commission and EU member countries met to learn about the future of European metrology research. Dr Christian Ehler, Member of the European Parliament, hosted the breakfast meeting to support EURAMET (European Association of National Metrology Institutes) in its goal to establish a new research programme for European metrology. “Research in metrology is not only a crucial factor for the quality of European production. It supports further development in areas such as health, security and energy.”

Milestone: First calibration guide for volumetric method

EURAMET Calibration Guide 21
 
Due to the lack of international documentation on calibration of volume measurements using the volumetric method the EURAMET TC-Flow decided to create guidelines and to harmonize procedures and concepts in that field of metrology. In 2010 the EURAMET research project 1158 was created. Volume specialists from different European National Metrology Institutes participated in the elaboration of this fundamental document.

The result is the first calibration guide for volume measurements using the volumetric method: EURAMET Calibration Guide 21.
 

22 becomes 23 - Bosnia-Herzegovina is a new EMRP member country

Bosnia-Herzegovina is now a member country of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP), following a unanimous vote by the EMRP Committee. This brings the total number of participating countries in the EMRP to 23.

"We welcome Bosnia-Herzegovina as a new EMRP member and wish them every success in the EMRP Call 2013. We appreciate very much the country's achievements which led to its membership. This represents another step towards further European integration in the field of metrology, facilitated by the EMRP", comments Jörn Stenger, EURAMET Vice-Chairperson (EMRP).

EMRP Project on Energy Harvesting

Metrology for Energy Harvesting project partners from the National Physical Laboratory and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt will be presenting a masterclass workshop at Energy Harvesting and Storage Europe 2013  in Berlin in April.

The Masterclass is being developed in association with IDTechEx and aim is to give industry specialists a much needed grounding in metrology to underpin the development of new materials and devices with increased energy output. It’s also a great opportunity for project partners to come into contact and engage with relevant industry users.

NPL’s Dr Paul Weaver will present a module on a piezoelectrics whilst PTB’s Dr Ernst Lenz will look at thermoelectric energy harvesting from a metrological point of view.

EURAMET e.V.

The European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET) is a Regional Metrology Organisation (RMO) of Europe. It coordinates the cooperation of National Metrology Institutes (NMI) of Europe in fields like research in metrology, traceability of measurements to the SI units, international recognition of national measurement standards and related Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) of its members. Through Knowledge Transfer and cooperation among its members EURAMET facilitates the development of the national metrology infrastructures.

 

EURAMET is responsible for the elaboration and execution of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) which is designed to encourage collaboration between European National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and partners in industry or academia. The programme funds joint research projects in specific fields of metrology with over 50 projects selected for funding so far and many more expected over the coming years.
