However, at the high outputs, cavitation occurs that leads to the destruction of the hydrophone. To avoid this problem, a new hydrophone with additional protected layers covering the electrodes was developed and tested in the experiments. A single element 1 MHz focusing ultrasound source was used for detailed measurements of the acoustic field in the axial and lateral planes. Measurements were performed with a new membrane hydrophone up to the focal peak compressional and rarefactional pressures of 55.6 MPa and of 12.8 MPa, respectively, when the shock front had already formed in the waveform. Based on the KZK equation, the numerical modeling for the beams of periodic waves with an initially uniform amplitude distribution was performed. Numerical solutions were compared with the experimental data and found to be in good agreement (within 10%). The influence of the limited bandwidth and the spatial averaging effect of the hydrophone on the accurate measurements of the acoustic field parameters were also investigated. In this paper, the macroscopic equations for the magnetic force and the induced electric potential are re-examined from a microscopic point of view and the corrective terms due to a non-uniform density of the conduction electrons induced by their interaction with the magnetic field are investigated. The results indicate that these corrections are irrelevant to the watt-balance operation. <div>This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Metrologia. Gravimetric gas standards containing CO2, between 300 and 60 000 µmol mol−1 (0.03% to 6%), in N2 were quantified by means of the TILSAM method. The spectrometric results were compared with the gravimetric reference values. We describe our implementation of the 'Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements' to infrared laser-spectrometric gas analysis. Data quality objectives are addressed by uncertainty and traceability flags. Uncertainty budgets are presented to show the quality of the results and to demonstrate software-assisted uncertainty assessment. The relative standard uncertainties of the spectrometrically measured CO2 amount fractions at, e.g., ambient levels of 360 µmol mol−1 and at exhaled breath gas levels of 50 mmol mol−1 were 1.4% and 0.7%, respectively. Our detection limit was 2.2 µmol mol−1. The reproducibility of individual results was in the ±1% range. Furthermore, we measured collisional broadening coefficients of the R(12) line of CO2 at 4987.31 cm−1. The relative standard uncertainties of the measured self-, nitrogen-, oxygen- and air-broadening coefficients were in the ±1.7% range. iMERA-Plus: Call 2007 Health English 10.1088/0957-0233/24/1/015202 1 J.Nwaboh O.Werhahn P.Ortwein D.Schiel V.Ebert proceedings IacomussiRR2013 A comparison between different light sources induced glare on perceived contrast Proceedings of the 27th Session of the CIE 2013 ENG05: Lighting: Metrology for Solid State Lighting The aim of this research is to compare the influence of two different luminous sources (incandescent light and LED light) on perceived contrast of objects in a disability glare context. Covariance matrices are defined over the real and imaginary components of the set of traces converted into the Frequency domain by means of FFT. Our aim is to reduce the data storage requirements so that they are kept proportional to trace length N instead of its square N2. Cholesky decomposition can be applied provided that certain conditions about the matrices are met: specifically they have to be Hermitian. Final objective of the research work is to trace the uncertainties in the Frequency domain back to well-known uncertainty contributions in the Time domain, such as jitter and noise. This will be done by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Over the past decade there has been a rapid uptake in development and subsequent use of portable optical–based 3D coordinate measuring systems. These optical based systems capture vast quantities of point data in a very short time, often permitting freeform surfaces to be digitised. Documented standards, for example like ISO10360, for the verification of fixed CMMs fitted with tactile probes are now widely available, whereas verification procedures and more specifically verification artifacts for optical–based systems are still in their infancy. Furthermore, industry is seeking traceability in 3D measurements of high precision components. A recent requirement is the demand for highly accurate measurements of large gears with diameters up to 1000 mm as used in gear boxes of wind turbines. Up until now it has been impossible to assure traceability of 3D measurements of big gears, since no traceable standards were available. This paper describes three different types of artifact that were developed during the project, namely tetrahedron artifacts for testing basic measurement capability of optical 3D devices, freeform verification artifacts for testing capability of measuring complex geometry, and a large gear artifact for task related calibration of different types of CMMs. In addition, artifact calibration data and associated measurement uncertainties and international intercomparisons are presented. These developments will be of considerable value to end users, calibration laboratories and producers of optical and tactile CMMs. This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Measurement Science and Technology. The challenge of measurement has risen with modern converters where Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors – IGBT – are used at high switching frequency. The theoretical basis for measurement errors are studied, both for measurement on the IGBT as a component, and on complete converter stations. The study shows that electrical measurements are difficult to augment to an accuracy level sufficient for the needs, and that supplemental method such as calorimetric measurement may be needed. In certain cases, there will be a possibility to make temporary connections to permit two converters to operate in back-to-back mode, permitting a direct measurement of losses. The achievable accuracy is studied and estimated. The modular divider will be used for traceable calibration of HVDC measuring systems up to 1000 kV in customers’ laboratories. The first priority in the design was the accuracy of HVDC measurements. In addition the divider was designed to have wide bandwidth, both to enable measurement of ripple voltages and to prevent damage during possible flashovers. Here we present first channel measurements at 300 GHz for two simple indoor scenarios, a point-to-point link on a desktop and a connection from a desktop to an access point within an office room. For the first scenario measurements are taken depending on distance, antenna types and transmitter/receiver placement. For the second scenario, measurements are obtained to identify line-of-sight and non-lineof-sight paths with up to two reflections and obstruction due to objects in the transmission path. The electrical power and the voltage were measured during high power application with an inline power meter and an RMS voltage meter, respectively, and the complex electrical impedance was indirectly measured with a current probe, a 100:1 voltage probe and a digital scope. The results clearly show that the input RMS voltage and the input RMS power change unequally during the application. Hence, the indication of only the electrical input power or only the voltage as the input parameter may not be sufficient for reliable characterizations of ultrasound transducers for high power applications in some cases Copyright (2012) American Institute of Physics. A pupillometric system has been built, constituted by an infrared illuminator and a high-resolution camera, in order to acquire eye images and get pupil dimensions through an ad hoc designed software. From the first tests differences on pupil size due to different spectrum and shape of sources has been founded even at equal luminance of the source This study, as a basic research on measurements of photobiological effects of light, would improve the knowledge of human visual system especially for applications in lighting design like road lighting or where psychophysical effects of light are important issues. <div>This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in the Proceedings of CIE 2012: 'Lighting Quality and Energy Efficiency'. </div> <div>CIE is not responsible for any errors or omissions in this version of the manuscript or any version derived from it.&nbsp; </div> <div>CIE has given permission for publication of the article within the EURAMET Repository.</div> Pupil size, pupillometry, photobiological effects of light, LED fileadmin/docs/EMRP/Repository/A169/ENG05_Lighting/07_copia_light.pdf EMRP A169: Call 2009 Energy Hangzhou, China CIE 2012: 'Lighting Quality and Energy Efficiency 19 - 21 September 2012 English 978-3-902842-42-8 1 L.Rossi L.Zegna P.Iacomussi G.Rossi proceedings ZhaoR2012 The Influence of Source Impedance in Electrical Characterization of Solid State Lighting Sources Proceedings of CPEM 2012: Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements 2012 ENG05: Lighting: Metrology for Solid State Lighting http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?arnumber=6250921 EMRP A169: Call 2009 Energy Washington, DC, USA CPEM 2012: Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements 1 - 6 July 2012 English 0589-1485 10.1109/CPEM.2012.6250921 1 D.Zhao G.Rietveld proceedings VolkersB2012 The influence of source impedance on charge amplifier Proceedings of the XX IMEKO World Congress : Metrology for Green Growth 2012 IND09: Dynamic: Traceable Dynamic Measurement of Mechanical Quantities www.imeko.org/publications/wc-2012/IMEKO-WC-2012-TC22-O6.pdf EMRP A169: Call 2010 Industry Busan, Republic of Korea XX IMEKO World Congress : Metrology for Green Growth 9 - 14 September 2012 English 1 H.Volkers T.Bruns proceedings HudlickaSH2012 Towards Metrological Characterization of Vector Signal Analyzers Proceedings of the European Microwave Conference 2012 IND16: Ultrafast: Metrology for ultrafast electronics and high-speed communications This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the European Microwave Conference. Their suitability to act as a support for a resistor chain in a wideband HVDC reference divider is characterized. The support material forms a parallel capacitance to the resistive resistor chain, and a bandwidth of more than 100 kHz is needed. The frequency dependence of dielectric constant has been measured in the range 20 – 100 kHz. The depolarization current of these materials was measured to be at least 6 orders of magnitude lower than the current through the resistive chain. Neither MACOR nor PE does build up space charge which POM does. Possessing the highest dielectric constant makes MACOR well suited for the application. The temperature distribution is measured first with a calibrated reference device and then with MR thermometry. Equal conditions for both measurements can be ensured by monitoring the voltage and current across the resistor during the heating. From the comparison of both measurements, the accuracy of the MR measurement can be assessed. The calibration phantom is MR compatible, and it has high reproducibility and low production costs. A wide variety of possible heating sequences can be employed and the phantom has a compact and easy setup. Thus, it can be used to quickly verify the results from newly developed MR thermometry sequences as well as to evaluate the uncertainties of existing sequences. To make a contribution to the new definition of the kilogram, a relative standard uncertainty of less than 2 × 10-8 has to be achieved. Each silicon surface is covered by a surface layer (SL). Consequently, correction parameters for the SL are determined to be applied to the mass and volume determination of the enriched spheres. With the use of a large set of surface analysing techniques, the structure of the SL is investigated. An unexpected metallic contamination existing on the sphere surface enlarges the uncertainty contribution of the correction parameters above the originally targeted value of 1 × 10-8. In the framework of this investigation this new obstacle is resolved in two ways. A new combination of analytical methods is applied to measure the SL mass mSL and the thickness dSL, including this new contamination, with an uncertainty of u(mSL) = 14.5 µg and 14.4 µg, respectively, and u(dSL) = 0.33 nm and 0.32 nm for the 28Si spheres AVO28-S5 and AVO28-S8, respectively. In the second part of the work, the chemical composition of these metallic contaminations is found to be Cu, Ni and Zn silicide compounds. For the removal of this contamination, a special procedure is developed, tested and applied to the spheres to produce the originally expected surface structure on the spheres. After the application of this new procedure the use of x-ray reflectometry directly at the spheres will be possible. It is expected to reduce the uncertainty contribution due to the SL down to 1 × 10-8. This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Metrologia. Among other quantities the volume of two spheres which are made of a highly enriched 28Si single crystal had to be determined. For this purpose a special Fizeau interferometer for the measurement of the spheres’ diameters has been developed at PTB. This paper reports the final results of the volumes, the uncertainties and also the latest findings regarding systematic corrections including the effects of surface layers on the pure silicon core. The counting procedure was based on the measurement of the molar volume and the volume of an atom in two 1 kg crystal spheres. The novelty was the use of isotope dilution mass spectrometry as a new and very accurate method for the determination of the molar mass of enriched silicon. Because of an unexpected metallic contamination of the sphere surfaces, the relative measurement uncertainty, 3 × 10-8 NA, is larger by a factor 1.5 than that targeted. The measured value of the Avogadro constant, NA = 6.022 140 82(18) × 1023 mol-1, is the most accurate input datum for the kilogram redefinition and differs by 16 × 10-8 NA from the CODATA 2006 adjusted value. This value is midway between the NIST and NPL watt-balance values. This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Metrologia. From a mass comparison among two 1 kg 28Si spheres and the 1 kg platinum–iridium (Pt/Ir) mass standards, the mass of the spheres must be determined with a combined standard uncertainty of less than 5 µg. The BIPM, the PTB and the NMIJ have carried out such a state-of-the-art mass comparison in air and under vacuum in order to reach this target set by the International Avogadro Coordination (IAC). The results obtained for the spheres AVO28-S5 and AVO28-S8 involved in the comparison have demonstrated that by using air buoyancy artefacts and sorption artefacts it is possible to achieve a relative uncertainty of 4.1 × 10-9. The reference value for each sphere has been determined, taking into account the traceability of the masses to the International Prototype of the kilogram, K, in due consideration of the correlations among 17 standards used directly or indirectly in this comparison. This work is related to the redetermination of the Avogadro constant NA with an intended relative measurement uncertainty urel(NA) < 2 × 10-8. The corresponding experimental investigations of the International Avogadro Coordination (IAC) were performed using this novel ‘Si28’ material. One prerequisite of the redetermination of NA is the determination of the isotopic composition and thus molar mass of ‘Si28’ with urel(M(‘Si28’)) < 1 × 10-8. At PTB, a molar mass M(‘Si28’) = 27.976 970 27(23) g mol-1 has been determined with an associated relative uncertainty urel(M(‘Si28’)) = 8.2 × 10-9, opening the opportunity to reach the target uncertainty of NA. On the basis of a gravimetric approach, three synthetic isotope mixtures were made, very similar to natural Si, by blending silicon isotopically enriched with 28Si, 29Si and 30Si. These mixtures served as references to calibrate measurements of (SiF3)+ current ratios. In this way, it was possible to make SI-traceable measurements of silicon isotope amount ratios, without any assumptive correction. The isotopic composition of the natural Si crystal WASO17.2 was remeasured and its molar mass was redetermined. The influence of antidot diameter, antidot spacing, and the aspect ratio of the lattice on the remanent domain configuration are investigated by magnetic force microscopy and supported by micromagnetic simulations. In the remanent state, areas of cells with the same orientation of average magnetization form magnetic super domains separated by super domain walls (SDWs). Two types of SDWs are identified. The first type is characterized by low stray field energy, is linear, and expands over many lattice constants. In contrast the second type shows high stray field energy and is situated at kinks of low energy SDWs. Its width can vary from a minimum of two lattice cells up to several lattice constants, depending on the lattice parameters. The occurrence and structure of these two types of SDWs as function of lattice parameters are classified and discussed in terms of the interplay of stray field and exchange energy. The input beam of 1/e2 diameter 1.9 mm was studied at the output of the device in both, s and p polarisation states. The beam diameter was measured to change by less than 0.1 mm after undergoing ten internal reflections within the transmission trap detector for both polarisation states of the incoming beam. The transmitted beam was observed to maintain a Gaussian distribution profile of the optical power intensity along the propagation direction, when compared to that of the input beam. The relevance of these estimates to current efforts to redetermine the Boltzmann constant with relative uncertainty of measurement uR(kB) ˜ 1 × 10-6 is supported with experimental results using trace moisture sensors and combined acoustic and microwave resonators. The outgassing does not represent an insuperable obstacle to accurate determinations of the Boltzmann constant in any of the current experiments. However, all workers in this field need to evaluate the extent of outgassing and devise a strategy for estimating and minimizing its effect. The quasisphere is assembled from two hemispheres such that the internal shape is a triaxial ellipsoid, the major axes of which have nominal radii 62.000 mm, 62.031 mm and 62.062 mm. The artefact has been manufactured using diamond-turning technology and shows a deviation from design form of less than ±1 µm over most of its surface. Our characterization involves both coordinate measuring machine (CMM) experiments and microwave resonance spectroscopy. We have sought to reduce the dimensional uncertainty below the maximum permissible error of the CMM by comparative measurements with silicon and Zerodur spheres of known volume. Using this technique we determined the equivalent radius with an uncertainty of u(k = 1) = 114 nm, a fractional uncertainty of 1.8 parts in 106. Due to anisotropy of the probe response, we could only determine the eccentricities of the quasihemispheres with a fractional uncertainty of approximately 2%. Our microwave characterization uses the TM11 to TM18 resonances. We find the equivalent radius inferred from analysis of these modes to be consistent within ±4 nm with an overall uncertainty u(k = 1) = 11 nm. We discuss corrections for surface conductivity, waveguide perturbations and dielectric surface layers. We find that the CMM radius estimates derived from each hemisphere cannot be used to accurately predict the equivalent radius of the assembled resonator for two reasons. Firstly, the equatorial flanges are flat only to within ±1 µm, leading to an equatorial 'gap' whose dimension cannot be reliably estimated. Secondly, the resonator undergoes significant elastic distortion when the bolts connecting the hemispheres are tightened. We provide CMM and microwave measurements to support these conclusions in addition to finite-element modelling. Finally, we consider the implications of this work on a forthcoming experiment to determine the Boltzmann constant with a relative uncertainty below 1 part in 106. In the pressure range from about 1 MPa to 7 MPa, 11 helium isotherms have been measured at the triple point of water (TPW) by applying a new special experimental setup consisting of a large-volume thermostat, a vacuum-isolated measuring system, stainless-steel 10 pF cylindrical capacitors, an autotransformer ratio capacitance bridge, a high-purity gas-handling system including a mass spectrometer, and traceably calibrated special pressure balances with piston–cylinder assemblies having effective areas of 2 cm2. The value of k has been deduced from the linear, ideal-gas term of an appropriate virial expansion fitted to the combined isotherms. A detailed uncertainty budget has been established by performing Monte Carlo simulations. The main uncertainty components result from the measurement of pressure and capacitance as well as the influence of the effective compressibility of the measuring capacitor and impurities contained in the helium gas. The combination of the results obtained at the TPW (kTPW = 1.380 654 × 10-23 J K-1, relative standard uncertainty 9.2 parts per million) with data measured earlier at low temperatures (21 K to 27 K, kLT = 1.380 657 × 10-23 J K-1, 15.9 parts per million) has yielded a value of k = 1.380 655 × 10-23 J K-1 with uncertainty of 7.9 parts per million. In this paper, two large disturbing effects are studied, namely the non-gravitational accelerations originated by rotation and translation of the flying body. Their contribution to the uncertainty of the free-fall acceleration is evaluated using the Monte Carlo method as proposed in Supplement 1 to the GUM. We investigate in this chapter the behaviour of junctions consisting of two weakly coupled superconductors. These junctions are nowadays called Josephson junctions. The macroscopic quantum state results in an exceptional behaviour of these Josephson junctions. They are the basis for various applications in superconductive electronics, e.g. in the field of metrology for high-precision measurements. The most significant representative of a metrological application is the Josephson voltage standard. This quantum standard enables the reference of the unit of voltage, the volt, just to physical constants. It is nowadays used in many laboratories world-wide for high-precision voltage measurements. The main component of each modern Josephson voltage standard is the highly integrated series array consisting of tens of thousands of Josephson junctions fabricated in thin-film technology. While Josephson junctions are conceptually simple, nearly 50 years of developments were needed to progress from single junctions delivering a few millivolt at most to highly integrated series arrays containing more than 10,000 or even 100,000 junctions. These large series arrays enable the generation of dc and ac voltages at the 10 V level, which is relevant for most applications. Conventional Josephson voltage standards based on underdamped Josephson junctions are used for dc applications. The increasing interest in highly precise ac voltages has stimulated different attempts to develop measurement tools on the basis of Josephson arrays for ac applications, namely programmable Josephson voltage standards containing binary-divided arrays and pulse-driven Josephson voltage standards both based on overdamped Josephson junctions. This chapter describes the development of these modern dc and ac Josephson voltage standards as well as their fundamentals and applications. This paper describes a different way of calculating the molar mass by solving an equation linking the measurement results to the ratio between the amount-of-substance fractions of 28Si and 30Si in the sample. The mathematical model and the ?nal measurement equation are much more straightforward than those previously reported, though fully equivalent. Dimensional metrology with coordinate measurement machines (CMMs) can be used to determine the resonator's volume, either directly or in combination with measurements of the resonator's microwave spectra. We assessed the uncertainty achievable when using a CMM to characterize the shape and volume of three QSRs. The resonators differed significantly in their design and construction: their inner volumes ranged between 524 cm3 and 2225 cm3, while the QSR geometries ranged from a diamond-turned triaxial ellipsoid to the variable misalignment of spheroidal hemispheres. Comparative coordinate measurements of two solid spherical density standards were used to identify and estimate type B uncertainties. We tested the regression of the CMM data to spherical harmonic expansions and determined the volume of a QSR directly with a relative uncertainty uR < 30 parts in 106. Additionally, spherical harmonic regression of the CMM data can place uncertainty bounds on the eccentricity parameters, e1 and e2, typically with a relative uncertainty uR ˜ 0.02. This is sufficient to determine corrections to both the acoustic and the microwave resonance frequencies of the QSR with a relative uncertainty uR < 1 part in 106 for all resonances. These figures assume that the enclosed volume of an assembled QSR is equal to the sum of the volumes of its two component 'hemispheres'. In practice this cannot be strictly true and the additional uncertainties in the volume of the assembled QSR are discussed. This approach is more flexible than conventional bridges at the same level of uncertainty. The Josephson bridge can measure over a wider frequency range, over a wider range of impedance ratios than conventional two-terminal-pair bridges. Furthermore, the phase angle between the two impedances can take any value. As a first application, we present measurements of a 1 : 1 resistance ratio at the 10 kO level in the frequency range between 25 Hz and 10 kHz. The uncertainties are better than a few parts in 108 and hence comparable to those of conventional impedance bridges. Quantization at up to 10 kHz was confirmed by varying the bias current of the Josephson arrays, resulting in constant resistance ratios within the measurement resolution. These fields are important to a wide range of applications requiring precise and accurate measurements of electromagnetic radiation and, in particular, the amount of radiant energy (light) that is perceived by the human eye. The candela has been one of the base units since the inception of the International System of Units (SI) and is the only base unit that quantifies a fundamental biological process—human vision. This photobiological process spans an enormous dynamic range of light levels from a few-photon interaction involved in triggering the vision mechanism to a level of more than 1015 photons per second that is accommodated by the visual response under bright daylight conditions. This position paper, prepared by members of the Task Group on the SI of the Consultative Committee for Photometry and Radiometry Strategic Planning Working Group (CCPR WG-SP), reviews the evolution of these fields of optical radiation measurements and their consequent impact on definitions and realization of the candela. Over the past several decades, there have been significant developments in sources, detectors, measuring instruments and techniques, that have improved the measurement of photometric and radiometric quantities for classical applications in lighting design, manufacturing and quality control processes involving optical sources, detectors and materials. These improved realizations largely underpin the present (1979) definition of the candela. There is no consensus on whether this radiant-based definition fully satisfies the current and projected needs of the optical radiation community. There is also no consensus on whether a reformulation of the definition of the candela in terms of photon flux will be applicable to the lighting community. However, there have been significant recent advances in radiometry in the development of single-photon sources and single-photon detectors and the growth of associated technologies, such as quantum computing and quantum cryptography. The international acceptance of these new quantum-based technologies requires improved traceability and reliability of measurements at the level of a few photons. This review of the evolution of the candela and the impact of its possible reformulation might lead, in the future, to a reformulation in terms of quantum units (photons). This discussion is timely since redefinitions of four of the other SI base units are being considered now in terms of fundamental constants to provide a more universally realizable quantum-based SI system. This paper also introduces for the first time a fundamental constant for photometry. This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Metrologia. Over this time, the apparatus has been through an uninterrupted series of upgrades that have improved its reliability to a point where continuous series of measurements can be taken fully automatically over periods of several months. A comprehensive analysis of possible systematic errors has now been completed and a large set of data has been analysed to calculate a value for the Planck constant h. This paper describes the watt balance in detail, explains the data acquisition and analysis thoroughly and presents the uncertainty budget. The value of the Planck constant determined with our apparatus is h = 6.626 069 1(20) × 10-34 J s with a relative standard uncertainty of 0.29 × 10-3. During my thesis, we developped a new vaccum chamber, which allowed us to evaluate the limiting systematic errors. The gravimeter was made transportable and was installed close to the LNE watt balance. The gravimeter uses atom interferometry, where a cold cloud of 87Rb atoms in free fall is manipulated thanks to two-photon transitions. We reduced the measurement uncertainty below the goal, except for laser wavefront aberation effects. This is currently under investigations and we aim for perfect control of the atomic trajectories. During the year 2010, our atomic gravimeter participated in international "Key" comparisons. The results we obtained are in agreement with other gravimeters, but we observed some fluctuations in the differences with other gravimeters, caused by variations of the wavefront aberration effects. In parallel, we developed three new methods of atom interferometry measurement. The first method uses a three-point algorithm which makes the measurement robust from vibrations. The second consists in diffracting atoms simultaneously by the four fields present in the chamber, in order to double the area of the interferometer, and thus increases its intrinsic sensitivity. Last, we designed and characterized a hollow pyramid, which allows the differents lasers to be replaced by a single laser beam, in order to create a compact transportable atomic gravimeter. This work aims to determine g with an atomic gravimeter and a dedicated gravimetric site. With a characterized relative gravimeter, a gravity mapping of the two pillars of the LNE experiment has been done and a model of the gravity variations has been performed. It gives an access to the gravity diference between two points in a 50 m3 volume above the pillars with an uncertainty lower than 3 ¹Gal (3 § 10¡8 m:s¡2). The gravity diference between the two center points is lower than the ¹Gal. The absolute determination of g is realized with a 87Rb matter wave gravimeter. Its conception is based on a work started on 2002 with the realization of a prototype which capabilities have been identi_ed. The di_erent elements of this new gravimeter are detailed in this work. The first signals were obtained in 2009. The device was the first atomic gravimeter to participate to an international comparison: ICAG'09 at BIPM. The characterization of the device has then been continued on the gravimetric pillar at LNE where the sensitivity reach a floor at 0:4 ¹Gal in 100 min. The accuracy budget is 5:4 ¹Gal, it was tested during a bilateral comparison with an FG5: the diference is (4:3 § 6:2) ¹Gal (k=1). As the main starting point, most accurate experimental results for the thermodynamic temperature and the dielectric polarizability of 3He and 4He have been deduced recently. This paper now concentrates on the results for the two- and three-particle interaction described by the second and third density virial coefficients of helium. A comparison between experimental DCGT results and new highly accurate theoretical ab initio results shows an impressive agreement. The experimental uncertainties have been estimated via Monte-Carlo simulations and are comparable to the uncertainty of the latest theory. Since a relative uncertainty of about 2×10-8 is aimed at, the macroscopic density, the isotopic composition and the volume of the unit cell of a silicon single crystal have to be measured with high precision. One step to improve the precision was the production of a silicon crystal of highly enriched 28Si. This paper addresses the effect of thermal expansion of that material in order to account for a possible discrepancy between the coef?cient of thermal expansion (CTE) of natural silicon and that of 28Si. The results of two independent CTE measuring methods are presented and compared in this paper. This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Metrologia. This correction is caused by the finite diameter of the light source acting as the entrance ‘pinhole’ aperture in the light collimating system. The finite diameter has the effect, that the wave which is incident on the sphere is a superposition of spherical waves which are slightly inclined with respect to each other. The resulting correction is essential for the high accuracy dimensional measurements of silicon spheres to determine the Avogadro constant – a new determination of which is a contribution to a new definition of the SI-unit kilogram. The PQED will be based on natural inversion layer photodiodes and it is expected to measure optical power with an uncertainty of 1 ppm. To achieve such a low level of uncertainty, the associated reflectance of the PQED must be of the same order of magnitude. The wavelength range from 450 nm to 900 nm and the oxide layer thickness from 10 nm to 500 nm were used in the calculations of specular reflectance. The results show that a simple two-photodiode design is suitable for the PQED if scattering from the surface of the photodiode is less than 1 ppm. For higher scattering up to 100 ppm, a more advanced detector structure may allow control of this uncertainty component at the level of 1 ppm. article PicardBBDM2008 Mass comparison of the 1kg silicon sphere AVO#3 traceable to the International Prototype K Metrologia 2008 12 12 46 T1.J1.2: NAH: Avogadro and molar Planck constants for the redefinition of the kilogram 1-10 To determine a new value of the Avogadro constant with a relative combined standard uncertainty of 2×10-8, the mass determination of a 1kg 28Si sphere is crucial and should be determined with the highest level of accuracy. In the next two years the laboratories involved in the International Avogadro Project should be able to determine the mass of a 1kg silicon sphere under vacuum with a combined standard uncertainty within 5µg. To obtain such a target it is essential to gain experience and to promote cooperation in mass measurement on silicon spheres among the laboratories involved. For this purpose an international comparison has been performed to evaluate the weighing procedure and to reveal the diffculties encountered in the mass determination of a silicon sphere. This particular comparison, which is the ?rst international mass comparison under vacuum conditions, has demonstrated that the reference value for the mass of a 1kg silicon sphere can be determined traceable to the International Prototype with a standard uncertainty of 4.0µg.
